The Cannibals
by Manoel de Oliveira

An opera-film. In love with the beautiful and mysterious Count d’Aveleda, Margarida scorns the amorous advances of Dom João, who wants to marry her. On their wedding night, the count reveals his terrible secret. Horrified, Margarida throws herself out the window. The count then throws himself into the fire, in the great fireplace. The next morning, the bride’s parents, unaware of what has happened, eat the remains of the count which have been “roasted” overnight in the fireplace. When they realise what was happened, they desperately want to escape, but then become calmer after they learn about the “fabulous inheritance”.
